Social Media Provides Vital Assistance in Response to Kerala Flooding
Response to the flooding in the Southern Indian state of Kerala last month received an unexpected boost – thousands of citizens used social media and mobile technology to organize and mobilize assistance to the disaster.
Large organizations like PQMD member World Vision utilized technology to request donations for relief kits. The Indian government requested assistance from software engineers around the world, who collaborated and developed the website www.keralarescue.in. Through the website, disaster relief volunteers in many of Kerala’s flooded districts could request assistance for those in need. Volunteers also organized on the popular social media platform WhatsApp.
