PQMD Members Mark Sixth Anniversary of Syrian Refugee Crisis by Reestablishing Commitment to Continued Aid
March marks what is largely recognized as the sixth anniversary of the Syrian Refugee Crisis. As a result of the Syrian Civil War, millions have been displaced from both Syria and surrounding Middle Eastern countries, making it the largest humanitarian and refugee crisis of our time. With more than 11 million people forced from their homes, half of which are children, and 13.5 million people, including 6 million children, estimated to be in need of protection assistance.
PQMD members have addressed the crisis for years, and continue their commitment and engagement in humanitarian aid to provide a multifaceted and sustained response to the situation. To assist displaced refugees in foreign countries, considerable cash & product donations to multiple NGOs have been sent from Sanofi US, Baxter, Abbvie, Johnson & Johnson, Henry Schein, Eli Lilly & Company, and GlaxoSmithKline, among others.
In addition to cash and gifts-in-kind from corporate members, PQMD NGO members such as Medical Teams International, Heart to Heart International, Direct Relief, Americares, World Vision, International Health Partners UK, MAP International, Project C.U.R.E., Unicef, MedShare, International Medical Corps, and Action Medeor have worked actively both remotely and on-location providing material support including (but not limited to):
- Infant incubators
- WASH & hygiene kits
- Surgical equipment & supplies
- Health & health-related services
- Education & child protection
- Basic essential medicines and personal items such as: antibiotics, pain reducers, wound care items, gloves, blankets, mattresses and other desperately-needed products.
“Over the course of this crisis, our members have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to those most urgently in need of assistance,” says PQMD Executive Director Elizabeth Ashbourne. “PQMD member contributions range from cash donations, to material and in-country/in-person support. The scope of their commitment and dedication to serving those in need is both powerful and humbling. What they do makes a difference…we could not be more proud of that.”
PQMD member support goes to aid not only those who have fled from Syria and surrounding Middle East counties, but those displaced internally as well. Members are steadfastly committed to providing life-saving and life–sustaining assistance to those in need, and will continue to supply financial and material support as needed as the crisis continues to evolve in scope.
