Coronavirus Update- the World Health Organization (WHO) Upgrades Global Risk to “Very High”
On Friday, February 28th, the World Health Organization (WHO) upgraded the global risk of coronavirus to “very high.” According to Dr. Mike Ryan, head of the WHO’s Emergency Health Program, the upgrade serves to warn governments that their healthcare systems may not be prepared for the outbreak.
To date, more than 50 countries have now reported cases of
coronavirus. Currently, over 80,000 people have been infected and approximately 2800 people have died. The majority of deaths have occurred in China’s Hubei province. Despite the spread of COVID-19, Dr. Ryan has stated that the coronavirus is not yet a pandemic, as that assumes every person will be exposed. Data has not yet supported this. However, the virus can still become a pandemic if government and society do not take the necessary steps to contain it.
