WHO Declares COVID-19 a Pandemic

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared COVID-19 a pandemic, the first pandemic caused by a coronavirus. COVID-19 is a viral disease that has now infected almost 120,000 people around the world. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is urging countries to make important decisions now to help curtail and mitigate the disease.

Tedros also stated that in the next couple weeks, the WHO is expecting cases and deaths to continue to rise. In the past two weeks, the number of COVID-19 infections have increased 13-fold outside of China.

The purpose of declaring the virus a pandemic is not to cause panic, but it also does not mean that countries should become complacent. Tedros has stated that COVID-19 can still be controlled as the majority of cases are in four countries. China and South Korea appear to have been able to mitigate their outbreaks.
