Product Donations Play Critical Role in Medical Missions Around the World
Each year, Dr. Joseph Hurley spends a week with the Helping Hands Medical Mission in El Salvador, performing surgery at no cost for impoverished patients at El Hospital La Divina Providencia in Santiago. Dr. Hurley and his team have evaluated 300 patients and performed more than 150 general, gynecological and pediatric and orthopedic surgeries during their past two missions. Products donated by Baxter have helped them save lives on every trip.
“Without our mission, these patients could not afford surgery,” he says. “And without Baxter product donations, there would be no mission.”
One of Baxter’s humanitarian aid partners, AmeriCares — an emergency response and global health organization, provides Dr. Hurley’s surgical clinic with needed medicines and medical supplies. One of the critical products that Baxter has donated through AmeriCares is a general inhalation anesthetic.
“Baxter’s product allows us to safely introduce anesthesia, so we can perform surgery the way it should be performed,” Dr. Hurley says.
On one mission, Dr. Hurley treated a sick patient who was experiencing severe abdominal pain for more than two weeks. She had been turned away from another hospital twice, after which she became septic and unstable. Dr. Hurley and his team immediately diagnosed and eventually stabilized her. She made a full recovery after two weeks in the hospital.
“Without the donated supplies, this woman may not have survived,” says Dr. Hurley. “Fortunately, we were in the right spot at the right moment.”
In 2015, AmeriCares sent 98 shipments of Baxter product in support of physician medical mission trips like Dr. Hurley’s. Anesthetics are just one type of many products donated. Often, physicians through AmeriCares request hemostatic and tissue sealant products for medical mission surgeries.
Dr. Hurley says simply, “Baxter’s donations through AmeriCares help us save the lives of patients.”
