Henry Schein’s Community Health Events Expand Access to Care
Community health centers play a critical role in health care across the United States, especially by providing vital preventative care. That’s why Henry Schein, Inc. founded Healthy Lifestyles, Healthy Communities (HLHC) ten years ago.
In 2013, Henry Schein entered a five-year partnership with the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) to better provide community health services through the HLHC program. Now, NACHC organizational members apply for selection to hold one of the Community Health Center-sponsored events. Chosen organizations receive grant funding and product donations for their health fairs.
The HLHC program enhances access to health care, prevention and wellness for underserved communities by providing free medical and dental screenings at fun and engaging community events around the country. At each HLHC event, local physicians, nurses, dentists and community volunteers screen for five diseases – hypertension, asthma, diabetes, obesity and poor oral health – and associated risk factors that commonly affect children.
The program also seeks to create a “Health Home” for participating children – volunteers assist participants in finding a local community health center where they are able to receive health care on a regular basis. In addition, participating children and their caregivers receive educational materials about preventing and treating these common health concerns.
Last year, Henry Schein held HLHC events at 14 locations throughout the United States and screened nearly 9,000 patients. Each health fair supported by HLHC receives a $5,000 in-kind donation, plus a $5,000 cash grant through the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, an organization that works to enhance access to health care globally. Since HLHC’s inception, more than $700,000 in supplies and financial assistance have been donated to nearly 80 health fair events.
According to a NACHC study published in 2014, community health centers play a key role in the nation’s health care system by providing continuous primary and preventive care. These CHCs reduce the risk of new health problems going unnoticed, saving the health care system $24 billion a year.
A flagship initiative of Henry Schein Cares, the Company’s global corporate social responsibility program, HLHC is co-sponsored annually by state and local community health organizations. Henry Schein’s supplier partners also provide critical support for the program.
Henry Schein believes in doing well as a company by doing good for society, and the company invests in public-private partnerships in order to make a positive impact in the world. By engaging our supplier partners, our customers, and our Team Schein Members (TSMs) in the program, Healthy Lifestyles, Healthy Communities exemplifies Henry Schein’s model of engaging our key constituencies to work together for the greater good.
