A disaster is no time to exchange business cards!

PQMD members work year round in more than 120 countries to build healthier communities by treating illness, eradicating disease and strengthening healthcare systems.   

So when a natural or manmade disaster strikes – PQMD members and their partners are already on the ground ready to assess the damage and accurately communicate what is needed.  Within 24 to 48 hours PQMD members come together by phone to share their initial damage assessments, discuss operational challenges and identify aid that is appropriate for the disaster and the community.  Scroll down to read about our short and long-term work in Haiti.

Baxter International Inc. and The Baxter International Foundation have committed over $2.5 million to support disaster relief efforts in response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Baxter has worked to meet the significant demands for product by collaborating closely with humanitarian aid organizations such as AmeriCares  and Direct Relief International . Joint efforts with these organizations and others have yielded shipments of over 280,000 units valued at over $2.2 million. Access to critical IV solutions, antibiotics and other vital drugs has facilitated the organizations' relief efforts to address the needs of the region.

Ridgefield, CT, January 14, 2010 - On Tuesday, January 12, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, followed by at least five powerful aftershocks.  The massive destruction left in the wake of the quake is devastating and our hearts reach out to all those families affected. 
The Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation is working to respond to requests for assistance for Haiti.  In disasters such as this, the Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation Product Donation Program provides medical donations through our established donation partners, AmeriCares, Catholic Medical Mission Board, Direct Relief International and MAP International.

To date, Bristol-Myers Squibb, its employees and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation have donated more than $7 million in cash and products to assist survivors of the catastrophic earthquake that rocked Haiti on January 12.
The company is donating nearly $6.5 million in medicines, including antibiotics and analgesics. The products are being shipped to the Catholic Medical Mission Board, Health Partners International of Canada and Project Hope -- three relief organizations on the ground in Haiti caring for the sick and injured.

Heart to Heart International continues to provide much needed relief to the crisis situation in Haiti. Emergency officials have estimated the latest death toll to exceed 222,500. Shelter and sanitation have become major concerns as officials must now account for overcrowded sites and the upcoming rainy season. IMA World Health (IMA) provided medicine to more than one million people in the first three weeks of June to control and prevent Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) in Haiti.  IMA worked with the Haitian Ministries of Health and Education to set up hundreds of distribution points in the Northeast, West, and Southern areas of the country, reaching large numbers of people through Mass Drug Administration (MDA).

International Medical Corps officially provided more than 100,000 patient consultations through our operations at the Hopital de l’Universite d’Etat d’Haiti (HUEH) and our clinics in Port-au-Prince, Petit Goave, Jacmel, and Leogane.  
They have saved lives on the spot, from amputations to gun shot wounds at HUEH, and for years to come with immunization campaigns and treatment for major child killers like malaria and waterborne disease.

MAP International responded to the initial disaster event in Haiti through the provision of emergency medicines and medical supply shipments to nearly a dozen of our field based partners.  These partners working in the provision of healthcare services, delivered treatments to thousands of Haitians affected by the earthquake of January 12, 2010.  Additionally hundreds of US based healthcare professionals transported MAP donated medicines for use in emergency medical clinics and trauma care settings during the early weeks of response.

During the first 20 weeks after the earthquake, Medical Teams International sent 18 volunteer teams with the first one arriving within three days of the disaster. When disasters strike, Pfizer and our colleagues respond immediately. Less than 48 hours after Haiti's devastating earthquake, Pfizer pledged over $1 million in medicines, as well as an additional monetary donation to international relief organizations. That number has since been increased to over $4 million in medicines, over-the-counter products and cash contributions. In addition, the Pfizer Foundation's Matching Gifts program matches financial contributions made by U.S.- and Puerto Rico-based colleagues and retirees to 501(c)(3) organizations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Immediately after the earthquake that shook Port-au-Prince and the surrounding region, sanofi-aventis set to work with its partners (Aide Médicale Internationale, Care, Red Cross, Handicap International, Médecins du Monde, UNICEF, MAP International, PAHO, Partners in Health, etc), to provide emergency financial assistance, donations of medicines (e.g. analgesics, antibiotics, and diuretics, together with treatments for infections, malaria and diabetes) and vaccines (tetanus and typhoid). Coordinated by the Group In liaison with the French Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Crisis Centre, Tulipe has made available a donation of 36,000 individual treatments to the population of Haiti.

That donation was shipped today to Port au Prince by the French Civil Security Organisation, and the fire fighters and medical teams of the Crisis Unit, who will be in charge of its distribution in the field. We are obviously closely watching the situation to see how it evolves, in particular with respect to the any additional needs that arise. To this end, we are working in parallel with our other emergency partners.

Despite hardships, the mobilization of international humanitarian assistance in support of UNICEF and the Government of Haiti has been on a scale rarely seen in the past, thanks to the generosity, commitment and support of governments, partners, and the public. Thanks to this outpouring of support, UNICEF mobilized an unprecedented global response with some 300 staff and consultants from around the world deployed to Haiti over the past three months up from 56 prior to the earthquake.
