Americares and MAP International Responding to Volcano Eruption in Philippines
Mount Mayon in the Philippines erupted on January 13, 2018. Ash and lava threatened nearby Legazpi City, prompting over 80,000 evacuations. More than 1,000 people are crammed into each of the 88 evacuation centers in Albay province. The eruption has released dangerous gases and particles that can cause respiratory issues.
PQMD members Americares and MAP International are responding to the Mount Mayon eruption. Americares is distributing protective masks, cleaning kits, and health and hygiene supplies from its Manila office. MAP International is focused on the reported 250 pregnant women and 800 new mothers among the displaced. They are providing Disaster Health Kits, containing antiseptic wipes, soap for hand-washing, feminine hygiene products, and other basic disease prevention items. Both agencies are monitoring the situation to provide additional assistance as needed. Read more here and here.
